NIT Surathkal-A Glimpse

NIT or National Institute of Technology is a public engineering college, which is located at Surathkal, nearly 20 km north of the city of Mangalore. Established in 1960, it was earlier known by the name of Karnataka Regional Engineering College and is among the 30 NITs in the country. The Institute has been given the title of an Institute of National Importance and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA/Washington Accord) for its undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses, which makes it the top NIT for imparting world class higher education in the country. NIT Surathkal has been ranked on number 8 in the list of Best Engineering Colleges 2012 by India Today and number 13 on Top Engineering Colleges of 2012 by Outlook India. It was also on number 9 on the list of Top Engineering Colleges in India in 2010 by Dataquest.

NIT Surathkal Campus

NIT Surathkal is located on a sprawling campus of 295 acres, on the NH 66 by the Arabian Sea shores. The beautiful campus has a private beach with a lighthouse. Most of the students and staff members of the institute reside on the campus, with separate colonies for both. The campus has nearly 200 residential homes, in addition to independent flats and houses. Additionally, there are on campus facilities like State Bank of India, Canara Bank with ATMs, post office, schools, playgrounds, food court, market, staff club and two co operative societies. Both the students as well as staff members can take the advantage of all these facilities.

Courses offered at NIT Surathkal

When it comes to courses offered at NIT Surathkal, there is a great variety here, both at undergraduate as well as graduate levels in the streams of engineering, science and management. It is equipped with 14 departments along with 11 support centers. Currently, the institute has 5500 students being trained by 200 faculty members, who are supported by 300 support staff. NIT Bangalore also boasts of 15500 alumni all over the world. Admission to B.Tech program was earlier based on All India Engineering Entrance Exam, with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry streams. From 2013 onwards, it will be done on the basis of JEE (Mains) test, with 60% weightage to test scores and 40% to class 12 or Second PU Board Exams. 50% of the seats are reserved for the students of the state of Karnataka, while 10% of seats in undergraduate programs are reserved for foreign students for Post Graduate program, admission is made on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), which is carried out by Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Technology. Other courses available at NIT Suratkhal are MBA and MCA.

The students are offered excellent facilities at NIT Surathkal and they are involved in a number of academic, technical and cultural activities. NIT Placements are an added benefit provided to the students of the institute. Placement is done at the beginning of Final Year of the courses and interested companies are invited on campus for conducting tests and interviews and choosing candidates for recruitment.
